As chronicled for the first time by The Garland Family

Hank Garland, a young and talented guitar player stormed into Nashville in the late 1940's at the age of fourteen, rapidly developing into one of the highest paid, most in demand session guitar player of his day. At the age of sixteen he recorded his million seller "Sugarfoot Rag" and also played on top chart records with artist the likes of the late Hank Williams Sr., Elvis Presley, Roy Orbison, The Everly Brothers, Patsy Cline, Brenda Lee, Bobby Darian and hundreds of country and western records.

Hank's ability and fame grew as he performed in cities across the United States. The emergence of "Be-Bop" and "Jazz" in New York City and Chicago particularly sparked Hanks interest in the late 1950's. Hank was contractually obligated to play strickly country music in Nashville. Hank, determined to play jazz set his took a trip to New York. Hank recorded three Jazz albums in 1958 with his final recording "Jazzwinds from A New Direction"coming  in 1961. If you were fortunate enough to be in New York City during Hank's stint, you could always find him at the "Birdland Club" jamming with jazz great Charlie Parker and George Shearing. Hank later would go on to record with George Shearing adding his unique style to the already popular New York Jazz scene.

“Hank was among the first true guitar virtuosos to emerge from the Nashville studios--a player who helped define the standards by which other Nashville session guitarists are judged.”

 Bill Garland
